Seamless gutters are formed from a continuous coil of aluminum, cut to the exact length needed for each run, with no joints along the length. The only joints are at inside and outside corners and at downspout drops. Sectional gutters — the DIY-store product — join every 10–12 feet and every joint is a potential leak. Seamless gutters cost modestly more installed but are far less likely to leak.
Common signs include visible rust or holes in the gutter body, visible separation at joints, gutters pulling away from the fascia, overflow during moderate (not just heavy) rain, and visible sagging or negative slope toward the downspout. If your gutters are original steel and more than 20 years old, or original aluminum and more than 25 years old, replacement is usually the right call.
